CSU Physics faculty, ADMU, pioneer cheap way to make aluminum transparent

Marco Laurence Budlayan, a Physics instructor at Caraga State University – College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (CMNS), along with researchers from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), developed a pioneering way to make aluminum transparent using tiny acid droplets.

Producing transparent aluminum oxide (TAlOx) is expensive and rigorous. The breakthrough research provides a cost-effective alternative to develop TAIOx, which is hard and resistant to scratches and valuable in optical systems, electronics, aerospace, and defense.  

Budlayan is a CSU Physics Program graduate with a magna cum laude distinction. He also pursued a PhD in Physics in ADMU. The research was conducted during his time at NAIST as a special research student from October 2023 to July 2024.

This feat, which is also featured in several news outlets, drives advancements in material science and highlights the potential of Filipino ingenuity on the global stage. Furthermore, it inspires students and faculty to further the collective commitment to academic excellence and innovation, contributing to SDGs no. 4 (Quality Education), and 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
